General description:

The Liberty Green local historic district was established in 1979 and is contained in the much larger Clinton Village National Register historic district, established in 1994. The district exhibits a high degree of integrity, both as a whole and in its constituent properties. It includes the lower or Liberty Green and six properties along the east side of Liberty Street between East Main Street and the railroad right-of-way. [2] Today Clinton Village continues to embody historical associations and much of the period's physical appearance from the days of its development as a town center. The dense concentration of 18th and early 19th-century houses, the presence of important civic, religious, and educational buildings, the numerous monuments, and the village green combine to recall the important role played by this area in the history of the town. [NR]

Significance of the district:

The area included in the local historic district is special to Clinton as it lies in the central portion of the earliest settlement, includes excellent examples of 18th and 19th century homes and encompasses original Town Common which is a focal point of Clinton commemorative and patriotic observances.
