General description:

This late 17th century cape form was probably built by John Osborn, son of Richard Osborn, at 187 Long Lots Road near the intersection of Bulkley Avenue North. The house was originally a two-room cape located in an area called the 'Long Lotts'. The oldest section of the house fronts Long Lots Road while a lean-to structure was added to the rear of the west side of the original two-room house. A library was added to the east side of the first floor, thus extending the front of the house to the east side. Additional rooms were added to the rear of the house prior to 1935 connected by a hallway from the rear of the original east room.

Significance of the property:

In 1671 the Town of Fairfield granted one of the 101 individual lots within 'Long Lotts' to Richard Orborn. A thorough investigation of the property has been conducted and it is believed to be possibly the oldest known dwelling in Westport.

Relationship with the Surroundings:

The house is approximately 50 feet from Long Lots Road behind a row of evergreens and sits on a 1.15 acre lot. The entire southern lot is Long Lots Road. A driveway with an easement from Long Lots Road exists on the west side of the house and continues to the back of the house. An old well is situated on the west side of the house. Situated between the eastern boundary of the house and Sturges Highway is another house lot.
